Chapter Six

The calm before the storm

They worked in silence. As Eve unloaded the dishwasher, she caught glimpses of Jill getting all the condiments ready for Gerard; washing the herbs, slicing lemons, then peeling potatoes. It took her a moment to realize Jill wasn’t even humming as she usually did when she concentrated on a task.

Gerard appeared to be lost in his own thoughts, but that wasn’t unusual. Except… that it was, because he’d been unusually chatty and forthcoming with his opinions.

They mostly ignored the growing crowd on the beach. The police tape had done its job, keeping everyone away from the crime scene. If she leaned out far enough, she could see that the tape hadn’t discouraged people from crowding the place right up to the edge.

Eve reminded herself to give the neighbor, Fred Leyton, a penny to cover his losses. The fact people were divided, with some expecting her to be at the center of another incident and others thinking it was all nonsense and she had nothing to do with attracting murder and mayhem to the island was overshadowed by the fact some were actually placing bets. It shouldn’t surprise her.

Eve’s gaze shifted and she glanced at Jill.

Where did she stand on the matter?

Did she have an opinion? Had she placed a bet?

Eve told herself to focus on work. She had an inn to run.

She’d taken in some iced tea and water for the guests who were waiting to talk with the detectives and had avoided questions by being strategic and dashing in when Detective Logan was in the dining room calling the next person. That had been over half an hour ago and she imagined they would be close to wrapping up the interviews.

Eve didn’t think the guests would be able to provide any valuable information since they had been out for most of the morning, returning in dribs and drabs, and only heading out to the back porch after lunch. Only a couple of guests had actually gone out to the beach, but they had stayed close to the inn and the murder had taken place further along, in front of Fred Leyton’s house.

Finally, Jill broke the silence. Huffing out a breath, she said, “I still don’t understand why they didn’t test the knives.”

“The killer used a knife with a thin blade,” Eve murmured.

Jill waved her sparing knife. “This has a thin blade.”

“I think they actually meant to say narrow.” Eve stopped and looked up. “Oh, of course. For some reason, my mind automatically pictured a cook’s knife because it’s long, but it has a wide blade, and they’re looking for a knife with a narrow blade.”

Gerard picked up a utility knife. “This is narrow, but too short.”

Eve nodded. By the sounds of it, the knife had been plunged in deep enough to pierce the heart. Serrated knives were long, but a serrated knife didn’t have a sharp point. “They’re looking for a knife with a very sharp point.”

“We are.”

Eve turned and saw the detectives standing at the door.
